About us

The history of the house – A part of Lysekil's heritage

For over a hundred years, this building has been a hotel and has stood as a living witness to Lysekil's development and history. The hotel has been a place for rest and fellowship, where guests from both near and far have been able to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the warm atmosphere.

Before the railway was built in the early 1900s, the area surrounding our hotel was a completely different world. Here lay a bay, Solviken, which extended almost all the way to the doorstep where our hotel stands today. Before the quay was filled in for the railway construction, Solviken was a bustling place for herring fishing, and the house was once a herring saltery where the catch was salted – an important industry for Lysekil and its inhabitants during the 19th century and early 20th century. The herring saltery was part of the thriving fishing trade along the Bohus coast.

When the railway was to be built, it required the pier to be filled in to make room for the infrastructure that would connect Lysekil with the outside world. At the same time as this change took place, the building gained a new function and became a hotel, a central place in the city's growing tourism industry.

Today, our hotel carries both history and tradition, where the old herring salting, the arrival of the railway, and the vibrant tourism have created a unique atmosphere. We are proud to continue preserving this heritage. Our hotel is more than just a place to stay – it is a place where history and culture meet to create memories that last.

The Sustainability Step at Villa Solviken

Experience more. Leave less of a footprint

At Villa Solviken, we strive to be a sustainable choice both for our guests and for the environment. We aim to create local and active experiences for our guests, such as lobster and crayfish fishing and hiking year-round. This way, we can both engage our guests and offer the staff opportunities to be a part of the local nature.

We consider sustainability in all parts of our operations. At our breakfast buffet, we use fewer plates and bowls, allowing us to refill as needed and thus reduce food waste. In collaboration with our laundry service, we employ a circular approach to extend the lifespan of textiles. Their eco-friendly laundry process recycles excess water and chemicals, contributing to reducing our ecological footprint and promoting sustainability.

In our kitchen, we focus on local ingredients, and we prepare the food with love and care. We often choose meat from farms in western Sweden, such as Gröna Gårdar and Dalsjöfors, and seafood and fish we get directly from the local boat LL91 Kristina whenever possible. Our mussels come from Scanfjord in Mollesund. It is important for us to use as much as possible of the raw materials to avoid unnecessary waste and make the best use of everything.

We are proud to offer our guests a sustainable and memorable experience here at Villa Solviken.
